History

The Black Bear Neighbourhood Pub opened for business in Lynn Valley, on February 9, 1997. Built in a turn-of-the-century craftsman–style design, it looks perfectly at home in this corner of North Vancouver, where trees are plentiful and glorious mountain views are everywhere. Warm and attractive on the outside, the Bear promises more of the same inside, and it delivers. High ceilings, rich woodwork, a large stone fireplace, and plenty of cozy seating areas invite customers to come in and make themselves at home.

Also inside are several historic photos of the Lynn Valley area and its pioneers. A beautiful collection of native carvings adorn some of the higher portions of the interior, as well as some interesting antiquities from a time gone by.

There is a heritage-style verandah with its own stone fireplace, plus additional heating for the cooler weather; Plenty of seating out there and a television for any sporting events. The Black Bear has several televisions carefully placed throughout, which cater to sports enthusiasts, but do not interfere with those seeking a quiet meal and a glass of wine!! The large 63” TV at the far end of the main area remains behind closed doors unless there is a special sports event on tap.

Club Keno provides popular entertainment at the Bear, which also has a selection of pull tab machines.

First and foremost though, is the quality of food and drink at this establishment and the excellent service that is provided. It has a great atmosphere, lots of devoted regulars, and “the finest staff on the face of the planet”. *

Interesting Facts…
Ron Slinger and Dave Raht built and operated the Queens Cross Neighbourhood Pub from 1979 to 1996, when they sold it and began to create the Black Bear. Sadly Dave passed away in 2006, but many of his ideas remain and Ron is now the sole publican. Milos Indic was General Manager and chef extraordinaire at the Queens Cross before moving on to the Black Bear with Ron and Dave. He created many memorable menu items, and it was he who coined the phrases “We do great food, not fast food” and * above. Milos passed away in 2005, but is fondly remembered by many.
